OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
tom white, president
Tom is a retired ObGyn physician. He was previously president of the Kalamazoo Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited in another century. He has flyfished the Boardman River since 1973 and has addressed conservation issues there and on several other rivers for many years. He has organized two community forums focused on the Boardman in Traverse City. He joined the Brook Trout Coalition in 2018 and is a Life Member of Trout Unlimited.
MARC Mckellar ii, vice president
Marc McKellar II, an attorney who practices in Traverse City, is an avid outdoorsman and conservationist. He is a member of the Kingsley Downtown Development Authority and also serves on the board of directors of the Adams Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
Marc’s outdoor passions are hunting waterfowl and fishing for trout, particularly Michigan’s state fish, the brook trout. He believes that the wild brook trout population in the Boardman River should be granted special consideration by the Michigan DNR.
ANDREW ADAMS, treasurer
Andrew Adams is an avid fly fisherman who hails from the U.K. He chairs the BTC’s Outreach and Fundraising Committee and is on the board of directors of the Adams Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
Andrew moved to Traverse City in 2017 after retiring from a job in IT security. “We have a responsibility to protect and nurture the wild trout for future generations,” he says. “This includes stopping the ill-conceived plan to introduce invasive steelhead to the watershed. It will be the death knell for the brook trout here.”
bob garvey, director
Bob Garvey moved to Traverse City in 2012 after retiring from a career as a certified public accountant in Annapolis, Md. He has been fishing since age 10, catching striped bass using an 8 weight rod in his formative years and now fishing on the Boardman River with a 3 weight rod at least three times a week.
Bob chairs the BTC’s Membership Committee and also serves on the board of directors of the Adams Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
GARY MAREK, director
Gary Marek has been involved in river and wild trout conservation for most of his adult life. He is the founder of the Pine River Area Chapter of Trout Unlimited and he served on the Michigan Council of Trout Unlimited for many years, including as Regional Director, Communications Coordinator, Vice Chairman and Chairman. Gary’s professional careers have included 10 years of teaching English at Elk Rapids High School and 18 years managing the Learning Lab adult-education program for the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments. He then spent four years working as a free-lance writer for a variety of national magazines, including Audubon, Trout, and Gray’s Sporting Journal. He continues work on The Third Point of Balance, a novel about the magic in rivers, the people who threaten and defend them, and corrosive commercialism.
